Business

Oxford Road Corridor has a high value business base with a concentration of life sciences, professional services and digital businesses. With access to a skilled workforce, a modern science park and incentives for new businesses wishing to grow, the area continues to attract investment and compete on a global scale.

Oxford Road Corridor is a recognised centre for applied research, innovation, and commercialisation. Major R&D assets that build on the translational research and discovery capability at the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University include the NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre, the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre, and the recently launched Christabel Pankhurst Institute for Health Technology.

These R&D assets sit alongside the clinical and research translation excellence of the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT).  MFT was formed in 2017 and is the largest NHS Foundation Trust in the country, with five hospitals on the Oxford Road Corridor alone. With 28,000 staff, it serves a general population facing some of the greatest health challenges in Europe, and its specialist services treat patients across the North West and beyond.

Health Innovation Manchester joins up the R&D and clinical excellence with GM’s devolved health and care system to accelerate the discovery, development and deployment of new solutions into the local NHS and care sector. This clinical academic campus feeds a strong cluster of life science start-ups, located in Citylabs and the adjacent Manchester Science Park, which benefits from Enterprise Zone status. The recently launched £500m Northern Gritstone Fund2, will provide much needed investment capital to grow a new generation of IP rich university spin-outs.

Manchester Metropolitan University’s School of Art recently added the School of Digital Art (SODA) to its campus and it will provide a flow of graduates to digital and tech businesses locating at Circle Square and the adjacent Manchester Technology Centre.
