Surprisingly lyrical selections make way for one of John Adams’ most iconic works. A rarely performed masterpiece, Harmonielehre shares its name with Arnold Schoenberg’s prolific study of tonal harmony published in 1911. Listeners are taken on a harmonic expedition as Adams explores the sonic landscape of late Romanticism through the lens of minimalism.

Is it a symphony? Some would say yes others would say no. It is, however, a 40-minute suite in three movements, partly inspired by tonal philosophy, partly inspired by Adam’s dreams, and undoubtedly an incredible piece of music.
