Opening Doors to Culture on Oxford Road Corridor
From 6–12 October 2025, we bring back The Cultural Welcome for its second edition — a week-long festival designed to connect students with the extraordinary cultural life that surrounds them here in Manchester.
This event is about much more than a programme of tours, performances, and workshops. It’s about building connections, breaking down barriers, and making sure that every student who comes to study on the Corridor feels not only welcomed, but also part of the city’s thriving cultural community.
The Oxford Road Corridor is home to one of the highest concentrations of cultural organisations anywhere in the UK. From the stages of the Palace Theatre and Contact to the galleries of the Whitworth and Castlefield Gallery, to the literary voices nurtured at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation and Manchester Poetry Library, this stretch of the city is bursting with creativity and innovation.
At the same time, the Corridor is home to 88,000 students across The University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, and the Royal Northern College of Music. These students arrive in one of the most culturally rich parts of the country, often without knowing just how much is waiting on their doorstep. The Cultural Welcome is our way of making those introductions.
For cultural venues, it’s an opportunity to develop new audiences and meet the next generation of theatregoers, gallery visitors, concert lovers, and makers. For students, it’s a chance to experience something beyond the lecture hall. To explore, be inspired, and begin to shape their own cultural journey in Manchester.
We know that students can face barriers when engaging with arts and culture — whether that’s cost, confidence, or simply not knowing what’s available. That’s why The Cultural Welcome prioritises openness and accessibility. Events are free or low-cost, often taking students behind the scenes and into spaces they may never have stepped into before.
From tours of the Whitworth and Manchester Art Gallery to backstage access at Contact, from feminist histories at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House to sauerkraut making at Castlefield Gallery and beer tasting at Manchester Museum, the festival offers multiple entry points to culture. By designing the programme around curiosity and participation, we make sure there’s something to catch every imagination.
The Oxford Road Corridor has always been a place of ideas and creativity. Its cultural institutions stand alongside world-class universities and pioneering research centres, reflecting Manchester’s identity as a city of innovation. Here, culture doesn’t just entertain — it educates, inspires, and builds community.
The Corridor has given the world revolutionary music scenes, literary giants, and theatre that challenges and changes society. With The Cultural Welcome, we are inviting students to step into that story, to discover the organisations shaping the city today, and to feel that this cultural landscape is theirs to enjoy and contribute to.
This year, the programme is even bigger, with highlights ranging from The Hallé at The Bridgewater Hall to Bad Language at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation, BBC Philharmonic premieres, and creative workshops at SEESAW and Castlefield Gallery. Whether your passion is theatre, film, music, literature, or visual art, there’s an invitation waiting.
The Cultural Welcome is about creating lasting relationships. We want students not just to visit once, but to keep coming back, making culture a regular part of their life in Manchester. That’s how we strengthen our cultural ecosystem, support our institutions, and most importantly, enrich the student experience on Oxford Road Corridor.
So this October, we invite every student — new or returning — to step inside, take part, and feel the warmth of Manchester’s cultural welcome.
