Ian Jones previews House of Social, Manchester’s newest food hall which arrives at First Street this summer.
Few cities have the bragging rights of Manchester. Whether it’s football, clubbing, comedy or music, we’re constantly punching above our weight on the world stage. And now, with Michelin stars finally popping up, the city’s restaurant scene is becoming a force to be reckoned with.
But it’s not all about fine dining and expensive wine cellars. Some of the best eating-out experiences can be found in Manchester’s food halls. This summer sees the launch of the most ambitious yet.
House of Social will be a major new food hall set to supercharge Manchester’s dining scene. It’s one of the biggest and most awe-inspiring yet, spanning 12,000 square feet across two design-led levels. You’ll find it on First Street, a stone’s throw from culture hub HOME. Constructed by Vita Group beneath a new student living complex, House of Social is set to be a must-visit, bringing together five standout independent kitchens, a striking house bar, a packed events calendar, and a dynamic atmosphere, all under one roof.
Jake Atkinson is the brains behind it all. He’s the driving force behind successful projects such as Mackie Mayor, Altrincham Market and The Picturedrome in Macclesfield. Atkinson has a knack for transforming spaces into bustling culinary destinations, and he’s bringing that same approach and eye for quality to House of Social.
“First Street is vibrant and dynamic, a diverse community hub of cultural energy,” says Atkinson. “House of Social fits perfectly here — it’s a lively, welcoming space that complements the neighbourhood’s spirit, bringing people together whether for a quick bite, meeting friends, or a night out.”
“We’ve got this stunning building with huge arched windows, amazing light, and a beautiful curving staircase. It’s full of character, and the food will match that,” Atkinson adds.
It’s geared around all-day use, whether that’s breakfast meetings, solo work sessions fuelled by good coffee, pre-theatre dinners, or late-night drinks with your mates. House of Social is made to match the rhythm of the city.
“At House of Social, we’re creating something familiar but with a fresh, contemporary twist,” says Atkinson. “It’ll feel more comfortable, urban, and energetic, reflecting First Street’s dynamism. We’re big on events and collaborations to keep the atmosphere evolving. The design blends industrial aesthetics with a warm, inclusive vibe.”
Four kitchens have been announced so far, with the fifth and final under wraps for now. Get ready to wrap your tastebuds around these:
Mughli: A Curry Mile institution since 1991, Mughli is finally making its long-awaited city centre debut. Renowned for its authentic charcoal-grilled meats and rich, flavour-packed curries, this family-run spot brings decades of Punjabi soul food expertise to the heart of Manchester. Expect classics like butter chicken and biryani, alongside a few mind-expanding surprises.
Burger & Beyond: London’s cult favourite, Burger & Beyond, is heading north for the first time. Their legendary Bacon Butter Burger — a dry-aged beef patty, double American cheese, crispy pancetta, and burnt butter mayo — is a must-try dish for any self-respecting food lover.

OK Taqueria: Get ready for a “Mexicali” experience from the team behind local successes Mughli, Gooey and Evelyn’s. You’ll get everything from crispy pork belly al pastor to vegan chicken-fried maitake mushrooms. For the early birds? Breakfast burritos loaded with jalapeño sausage and cheesy tots. It’s fast, fiery and proudly “un-autentico.”

Choi Wan: This exciting new concept from restaurateur Victor Yu and chef Bruno (formerly of Michelin-starred Northcote and The Samling) reimagines Hong Kong comfort food. Choi Wan will feature signature dishes such as prawn toast crumpets, rotisserie chicken, and a signature curry sauce perfected over 40 years. It’s a modern interpretation of a cherished family tradition.
“Our traders are handpicked for incredible food, their brand, passion, and creativity — a mix of established names and new concepts from trusted operators, all bringing unique flair,” says Atkinson. “They’re a community, not isolated operators, sharing a commitment to quality and hospitality. They’ll team up on events and specials — the traders are the most important part of a food-led venue like this.”
But House of Social is more than just food — it’s a modern-day community hub. Its prime First Street location includes co-working spaces, a vibrant house bar that serves drinks throughout the day and into the night, plus a regular calendar of events to keep things exciting. Residents in the student accommodation above will enjoy exclusive perks, but the doors of House of Social are open to all.
“What do we want people to feel when they walk into House of Social? Like they belong — like it’s both familiar and new,” says Atkinson. “It’s a community hub where everyone’s welcome, from families to groups on a night out. We want House of Social to be a place to relax, connect and feel inspired.”
Whether you’re a student, a local resident, an office worker, or a visitor exploring the city, it’s all set to be the social heartbeat of Manchester.
