The Whitworth invites students to an inspiring Thursday Late with Short Supply, a leading arts organisation for emerging artists in the North West.
Based in Manchester, Short Supply is an artist-led community interest company dedicated to championing early-career and underrepresented artists — particularly queer, working-class, and regional creatives. They create radical, joyful, and accessible pathways into the art world through exhibitions, commissions, competitions, talks, and workshops. Their work tackles the real barriers creatives face in building sustainable careers, working in partnership with artists, arts organisations, and commercial partners to open new doors and opportunities.
In this special Thursday Late, Short Supply will share how a creative career can start while you’re still in art school — and how you can build momentum to take the art world by storm. Using real-life case studies from their book 517 Degrees, they’ll highlight successful strategies for establishing your practice in Manchester and beyond, offering practical tips, insider advice, and plenty of encouragement.
Whether you’re already making work or just starting to figure out your creative path, this is a chance to connect with people who understand the challenges, speak honestly about the journey, and believe in the power of emerging voices.
If you want to make your mark in the art world, this Thursday Late is the perfect place to start.
517 Degrees celebrates five years of MADE IT, the graduate art prize for the North West, established in 2019 by Short Supply. Featuring profiles from alumni who have exhibited in MADE IT over the years and essays by guest writers from the North West, 517 Degrees is your glance into the chaos, conundrums and creative climate art school graduates in the 21st century face – and your guide to navigating this.
