From the team behind the multi-award-winning The Play That Goes Wrong comes Thespians, a brand-new musical comedy that reimagines the origins of theatre with Mischief’s trademark blend of chaos, comedy and clever storytelling.
Set in 534 BC, the story unfolds on Greece’s smallest island, where the inhabitants are desperately trying to avoid defeat in a nationwide prayer competition devised by a notoriously thin-skinned tyrant. With the ultimate penalty for failure being death, the stakes could not be higher. Their fortunes begin to change when Thespis accidentally invents acting, sparking the creation of the world’s first play and laying the foundations for theatre as it is known today.
Filled with music, romance and plenty of laughs, Thespians transports audiences to Ancient Greece for an adventure packed with larger-than-life characters, a love story worthy of Aphrodite and a celebration of empathy, imagination and the power of stepping into someone else’s shoes.
The musical is written by Jonathan Sayer, co-writer of The Play That Goes Wrong, Peter Pan Goes Wrong and The Comedy About a Bank Robbery, alongside Ed Zanders, musical director of Mischief Movie Night. Combining comedy, choreography and theatrical mayhem, Thespians offers a fresh and hilarious take on how theatre began.
