In collaboration with the RNCM, the Hallé presents a festival celebrating Philip Glass’s best-loved works. Audiences are invited to explore the full lineup of events.
Following the success of his larger-scale orchestral and stage creations, Glass sought to compose a work that would be more accessible to a wider audience.
In 1981, he wrote Glassworks, a six-movement piece designed—aptly for the decade—to be ‘Walkman-suitable.’ The work was released on both LP and cassette, each featuring a unique mix: the LP for home listening and the cassette with a headphone-specific mix for personal tape players.
Glass’s efforts were rewarded with instant success. Though a chamber piece, Glassworks is rich and varied in its rhythms and textures, employing members of all instrument families to create a shimmering, anthemic sound.
