The Hallé - Janacek's Sinfonietta

Suk – Fantastic Scherzo
Rachmaninov – Piano Concerto No.4
Dukas – The Sorcerer’s Apprentice
Janácek – Sinfonietta

Conductor
Sir Mark Elder

Featuring:
Boris Giltburg, piano

A classic Hallé programme, mixing familiar composers with lesser-known works, is framed by Czech music. Suk’s Fantastic Scherzo is a rarity, yet it is graced by the most beguiling of Bohemian waltzes. Remarkably, for such a popular composer, Rachmaninov’s final piano concerto hasn’t been played by the Hallé for over 20 years. Described by Sir Mark as a ‘great work of sadness and nostalgia’, it requires an outstanding virtuoso and the Hallé is delighted to welcome back Boris Giltburg, described in Gramophone as ‘a truly remarkable Rachmaninov interpreter’. After the disastrous chaos wrought by Dukas’s hapless Sorcerer’s Apprentice, so vividly evoked in music, order is restored with Janácek’s Sinfonietta. Boasting no less than 25 brass players, including nine trumpets, its exultant fanfares will resound around The Bridgewater Hall.
