Seth Parker Woods

Two-time GRAMMY-nominated cellist Seth Parker Woods, described by The Guardian as “a cellist of power and grace,” brings an inventive and emotionally charged programme to the Inspirational Artists series.

Thus Spoke Their Verse spans three centuries of music, exploring identity, storytelling, and the rich expressive range of the cello. At the heart of the recital are three Sarabandes from Bach’s cello suites—used as sonic anchors—interwoven with works by Carlos Simon, Nathalie Joachim, Alvin Singleton, and others. These juxtapositions connect tradition with innovation, classical with contemporary, and the familiar with the exploratory.

This is an intimate and boundary-pushing performance from an artist at the forefront of redefining the cello’s voice in modern music.

Programme:

  • J.S. Bach: Sarabande from Suite No. 1 in G major, BWV 1007
  • Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson: Calvary Ostinato from Lamentations: Black/Folk Song Suite
  • Giacinto Scelsi: Maknongan
  • Fredrick Gifford: Difficult Grace for speaking cellist and electronics
  • J.S. Bach: Sarabande from Suite No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1008
  • Nathalie Joachim: Dam Mwen Yo for cello and electronics
  • Alvin Singleton: Argoru II
  • Monty Adkins: Winter Tendrils for cello, electronics and film
  • J.S. Bach: Sarabande from Suite No. 5 in C minor, BWV 1011
  • Conrad Beck: Moderato and Tranquillo from Drei Epigramme
  • Carlos Simon: Between Worlds
  • Chinary Ung: Khse Buon
