Raise the Bar From The Ground Up

Raise The Bar: From The Ground Up comes to Contact in August, presenting a powerful documentary and photography exhibition that celebrate the communities, organisations and individuals shaping Manchester’s grassroots urban music scene.

For decades, Manchester’s cultural identity has been defined by the artists who broke through. Far less visible are the venues, promoters, organisers, community groups and grassroots movements that made those breakthroughs possible. Raise The Bar: From The Ground Up explores this often-overlooked infrastructure through the story of Raise The Bar and the wider creative ecosystem that surrounds it.

Documenting three years of work, the film features intimate interviews with artists, venue owners, festival directors, cultural leaders and community partners. Together, they reflect on what it takes to create and sustain opportunities for emerging talent in a city shaped by inequality, ambition and constant change. At its heart, the documentary is a story about belonging, exploring how communities build platforms where none existed, create opportunities in the absence of investment, and use music as a force for connection, identity and collective action.

Blending personal testimony with a wider exploration of Manchester’s contemporary cultural landscape, Raise The Bar: From The Ground Up asks important questions about who has access to creative opportunity, who shapes a city’s cultural future, and what is lost when grassroots spaces disappear. At a time when independent music venues and cultural organisations face unprecedented challenges, it offers a timely celebration of the people working tirelessly behind the scenes to nurture talent, sustain communities and keep culture alive at its source.

Alongside the screening, audiences are invited to explore a photography exhibition featuring work by Manchester photographers who have spent years documenting the city’s music culture, nightlife and creative communities. Together, the film and exhibition provide a unique snapshot of a defining moment in Manchester’s cultural story, capturing not only the artists on stage, but the people, places and movements helping to shape the city’s future from the ground up.
