Fifty years to the day since a teenage Peter Hook walked into the Lesser Free Trade Hall and walked out with a new purpose, he returns with a one-off show that traces every beat of the journey that followed. On 4 June 2026, Peter Hook & The Light take over Manchester Academy for a career-spanning set marking the golden anniversary of the Sex Pistols gig that sparked Warsaw, Joy Division, New Order—and the rest of Hooky’s unmistakable legacy.
Borrowing £35 from his mum the day after that 1976 show set everything in motion: the jagged power of early Warsaw, the timeless weight of Joy Division, the pulse of New Order, and later projects Revenge, Monaco and Freebass. This anniversary concert promises to pull from all eras, a rare full retrospective performed by one of the city’s most influential musicians. Hooky has also teased “a couple more surprises along the way,” making the night feel as much like a celebration as a reckoning with fifty years of history.
Sharing the bill are Buzzcocks—fitting guests, given Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto organised those legendary Sex Pistols dates. As they mark their own 50th year, their presence closes a neat historical loop: two bands shaped by the same night, returning half a century later to honour its impact.
This is Hook’s only full headline UK show of 2026, set in the venue that now holds the kind of crowd that could never have squeezed into the Lesser Free Trade Hall. Expect a set stitched from every chapter of an extraordinary career, played with the energy of someone still fuelled by the spark that lit back in ’76.
