Spontaneity and instinct form the foundation of the RNCM’s innovative Make-it-up-as-we-go-along (MIUAWGA) Ensemble. Led by Head of Jazz and Improvisation Steve Berry, the ensemble explores musical improvisation, creating music entirely in the moment.

This year, MIUAWGA collaborates with acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, composer, and arranger Fred Thomas. Described by Gramophone Magazine as a “boundary-blurring composer and improviser,” Thomas is renowned for his eclectic artistry, spanning reimaginings of J. S. Bach to contemporary styles. This marks his second appearance at the RNCM this year, following his performance in the Inspirational Artists series alongside Alice Zawadzki and Misha Mullov-Abbado.

As no piece is ever performed the same way twice, this event offers a rare opportunity to experience a truly unique live performance.
