Join Blackwell’s Manchester for a special event on writing in translation, featuring author Miha Mazzini and translator Celia Hawkesworth, in conversation about their work.

Miha Mazzini’s Erased tells the story of Zala, a woman and mother who discovers she and her newborn have been wiped from official records due to a “software error,” exposing the Kafkaesque bureaucracy of Slovenia’s system and the human cost of administrative violence. It is a tense, gripping thriller about one mother’s fight for recognition and justice.

Celia Hawkesworth discusses her translation of Daša Drndić’s Dying in Toronto, which chronicles the author’s first year as a refugee in Canada. Combining essays with narrative storytelling, the book blends fact and fiction to explore displacement, survival and social observation with poignancy, wit, and insight into the challenges faced by immigrants.

Miha Mazzini is a Slovenian author, screenwriter and filmmaker, with over 30 books translated into 15 languages and work featured in prominent anthologies including Pushcart Prize 2012 and Best European Fiction 2018. Celia Hawkesworth is a distinguished translator of over 40 works, specialising in Eastern European literature, and has received numerous awards for her translations, including the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation and the Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize.
