Kai Strobel

As part of the RNCM Day of Percussion, International Visiting Professor Kai Strobel appears alongside the College’s emerging percussionists in a special showcase.

Strobel, a leading figure in contemporary percussion and winner of top honours at the TROMP Percussion Competition and the ARD Music Competition, brings his international experience to the stage in a programme that highlights both collaboration and innovation.

A central feature of the event is Steve Reich’s Quartet for two vibraphones and two pianos. Written in response to friendly creative rivalry with composer Nico Muhly, the work departs from Reich’s earlier style, drawing on the character of a string quartet and using its slow movement to explore shifting harmonies, unexpected modulations and the composer’s trademark rhythmic drive.

Strobel’s career includes performances with major European ensembles such as the Bavarian State Symphony and the St Petersburg State Capella. Alongside his concert work, he is committed to education through his professorship at the Conservatorio Della Svizzera Italiana and as co-founder of the Boum-Percussion Academy.
