The International Women’s Day Walking Tour offers a guided exploration of Manchester’s rich history of women connected to the Oxford Road Corridor. The walk uncovers the stories of artists, writers, scientists, medics and campaigners who were pioneers in their fields, many of whom remain under-recognised today, including Elizabeth Gaskell.

Led by an experienced Manchester guide, the route traces the city’s social and cultural landscape before concluding at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House, where participants can continue their discovery of Gaskell’s life as a writer, social reformer and radical thinker. The experience combines walking tour and museum visit, offering both historical context and deeper insight.

All proceeds from ticket sales support Elizabeth Gaskell’s House, an independent museum and registered charity dedicated to preserving and sharing her legacy. The tour is open to all adults and is wheelchair accessible. Content includes sensitive historical themes, so it is not suitable for children.

The tour is guided by Philippa Vishnyakov, a qualified Green Badge Guide with a long-standing interest in uncovering and sharing women’s stories from Manchester’s past.
