Manchester Poetry Library hosts an International Mother Language Day Open Mic, welcoming readings in any language.
Readings are welcomed in any language, and participants may choose to read their own poems or work by a well-known—or lesser-known—poet. Those who are unsure are encouraged to attend and decide on the night whether they would like to read. Participants may also choose something spontaneously from the library’s collection or simply stay to listen.
This year, the event will be joined by special guests to celebrate a collaboration with Voiced: The Festival for Endangered Languages, Afrocats and Manchester City of Literature. Places to read will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Refreshments will be provided.
Voiced: The Festival for Endangered Languages celebrates artists working in endangered languages and dialects through poetry, performance, talks, live events and visual art. The UK’s first creative festival of its kind, Voiced highlights international linguistic vitality alongside endangered dialects thriving within the UK. Co-curated by artist Sam Winston and poet Chris McCabe, the programme introduces fresh ways of thinking about—and engaging with—language.
