HOME presents a weekend celebrating the explosive rise of Hong Kong’s heroic bloodshed cinema, a style that redefined action filmmaking in the 1980s and beyond. Across three days, the season brings together five landmark films that showcase the genre’s blend of stylised violence, operatic emotion and neon-soaked urban storytelling.

Emerging from a rapidly changing Hong Kong film industry, heroic bloodshed combined gritty contemporary noir with the influence of classic wuxia and European crime cinema. The result was a cinematic language defined by high-stakes moral codes, honour-bound criminals, renegade cops and balletic, large-scale action set pieces.

This season highlights key works from directors John Woo, Ringo Lam and Tsui Hark, alongside iconic performances from Chow Yun-fat, whose collaborations helped define the genre’s global impact.

From breakthrough thrillers to genre-defining classics, each screening captures the movement’s signature shift between stylised brutality and heightened melodrama, with meticulously choreographed action and emotionally charged storytelling throughout.

Programme includes:
City on Fire (4K restoration, with intro), A Better Tomorrow (4K restoration), The Killer (4K restoration), Bullet in the Head (4K restoration, with intro), and Hard Boiled (4K restoration, with intro).
