On this walking tour, discover the history of Manchester women associated with the Oxford Road Corridor. Artists, writers, scientists, medics, protestors – many were pioneers in their fields but may still lack recognition. Others have been hidden in the footnotes of the city’s history – it’s time to hear their stories too.
Meet outside the Grosvenor East Building (near Manchester Poetry Library) on Cavendish Street which is down the side of Grosvenor Square. Your guide will be there to meet you from 11.15am, and we’ll set off promptly at 11.30am.

Please dress for the weather and a walk around town. We’ll be outside for 90 minutes, after which the walk ends at Elizabeth Gaskell House, the former home of a 19th Century author whose novels tackled the social issues of the day. You can then explore the House at your leisure – students will have free entry on the day.
Philippa Vishnyakov is leading the walk, commissioned by Elizabeth Gaskell House. Philippa has been a qualified Green Badge Guide for Manchester since 2009 and has a particular interest in finding and highlighting the stories of women in the city’s history.
The walk is free for students, although booking is essential as places are limited. The walk is about women but not exclusively for women. The route is wheelchair accessible. Note that the content includes some sensitive topics such as maternal and baby loss.
