Gretel brings her new album Squish to The Deaf Institute this June, marking a return under a streamlined name and a renewed sense of direction.
Formerly known as Gretel Hänlyn, Maddy Haenlein emerged in 2021 with a run of early releases that quickly marked her out as one of the UK’s most distinctive new voices. After stepping back to regroup and refine her approach, she returns with Squish, a record written and recorded after a period of creative reset.
Live, the project moves between heavier, distorted moments and more stripped-back, intimate passages, reflecting the contrast at the heart of her writing. It’s a set shaped by emotional intensity, vulnerability and sharper self-definition than her earlier work.
This show at The Deaf Institute follows a period of recalibration and marks the next stage in her live return.
