Great Lake Swimmers bring their long-established indie folk sound to YES Basement, led by songwriter and vocalist Tony Dekker.
Formed in Ontario in 2003, the band has evolved through several line-ups while maintaining a core partnership between Dekker and multi-instrumentalist Erik Arneson. Their music is defined by spacious arrangements, acoustic textures and Dekker’s distinctive vocal style, which remains central to the group’s identity.
Across more than two decades, Great Lake Swimmers have recorded in unconventional spaces—old churches, community halls, rural buildings and historically significant sites—embracing natural acoustics as part of their sound. Their fourth album, Lost Channels, created in the Thousand Islands region of the St. Lawrence River, reflects this approach, drawing on the landscape and history of the area. The band’s catalogue continues to balance quiet introspection with fuller folk-rock instrumentation, expanding their live presence while retaining the intimacy of their earliest recordings.
Known for extensive touring throughout Canada, the United States and Europe, Great Lake Swimmers have shared stages with artists including Feist, Goldfrapp, Bill Callahan, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, and Béla Fleck & The Sparrow Quartet. Their show at YES Basement offers an opportunity to hear material from across their catalogue performed in a close, atmospheric setting suited to their acoustic-driven sound.
