Genesis Owusu returns to Manchester this December, bringing his ambitious new album REDSTAR WU & THE WORLDWIDE SCOURGE to the stage at Gorilla.
Born in Ghana and based in Canberra, Owusu has established himself as one of contemporary music’s most inventive voices, blending elements of soul, funk, punk, hip hop, alternative pop and rock into a sound that defies easy categorisation.
His third studio album, REDSTAR WU & THE WORLDWIDE SCOURGE, is his most expansive and politically charged work to date. Across 15 tracks, Owusu confronts themes of political unrest, extremism, inequality and social division, while also exploring solidarity, empathy and hope. The result is a record that moves between moments of confrontation and celebration, drawing on a broad palette of influences to create something both urgent and deeply personal.
Recorded in South Wales with producer Dann Hume, the album emerged from an open-ended creative process where no genre or idea was off limits. From neo-soul and funk to synth-punk and alternative pop, its constantly shifting sound mirrors the complexity of the world it reflects.
This Gorilla show offers the chance to experience Owusu’s most ambitious work yet, performed by an artist whose fearless approach to songwriting continues to push beyond convention.
