This is an evolving exhibition at the Whitworth in which works are regularly exchanged and displays refreshed, revealing the gallery’s recent acquisitions alongside existing collection works.
The display reflects on the history of the collection and shares the gallery’s vision for its future. Recently, the Whitworth has been acquiring work that expands, enriches, and troubles its contents, departing from a narrow art history that privileges white male artists.
This iteration of Exchanges includes a special focus on contemporary textile art by women artists from South Asia and the British South Asian diaspora, collected through the Art Fund New Collecting Award awarded to previous Assistant Curator Uthra Rajgopal in 2019.
