Elias String Quartet portrait

As part of the new Inspirational Artists series, the Elias Quartet, recognised as one of the most intense and vibrant quartets of their generation, will return to their alma mater, the Royal Northern College of Music, where they formed in 1998. Known for their long-standing association with the College, the Quartet will perform a selection of music they hold dear.

Among the featured pieces is Schumann’s first quartet, a composition cherished by the ensemble for its unique blend of introspection, personal reflection, and moments of warmth and joy. This emotionally charged piece offers a rewarding experience for both performers and audience members alike.

The Quartet developed a close working relationship with composer Sally Beamish when the BBC Proms commissioned her to write Reed Stanzas for them in 2011. Subsequently, The Wigmore Hall and Harvard Musical Association commissioned 9 Fragments, composed as a companion piece to Schumann’s first quartet. Sally writes: ‘My quartet consists of very short, fragmentary movements – each tilting a broken mirror towards a particular passage in Schumann’s work and reflecting widely differing moods; from melancholy to elation…’

As for Haydn, the Elias Quartet simply have a deep love for his music. In fact, he was the first composer they ever played together.
