Dave Haslam

To mark the publication of Adventure Everywhere, Dave Haslam’s short format book about Pablo Picasso’s Paris nightlife, Dave Haslam will be joined by the acclaimed conceptual artist Jeremy Deller to discuss big nights out; Picasso, Keith Haring, acid house, clubs, and café bars; and the links between music and art, and art and life after dark.

Dave Haslam is a former DJ at the Hacienda in Manchester, and the author of several full-length and short format books. His DJ-ing has taken him to the likes of Berlin, Lima, New York, and Paris. His ‘memoir Sonic Youth Slept on My Floor (2018) was proclaimed Book of the Year by Gilles Peterson. His current project is a series of short format books; subjects have included Sylvia Plath, Keith Haring, and the Angry Brigade. Adventure Everywhere is the seventh book in the series.

Haslam’s special guest co-conversationalist at the Whitworth is the Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller. His works have included a recreation of a confrontation at Orgreave during from the Miners’ Strike, an inflatable Stonehenge, the film Everybody In the Place situating rave and acid house at the centre of social changes in 1980s Britain, Acid Brass, and his British pavilion for the 55th Venice Biennale which included a vast mural of William Morris sinking oligarch Roman Abramovich’s yacht in the Venetian lagoon.
