HOME presents A Message in a Bottle, a powerful and thought-provoking exhibition showcasing the creative talents of learners from Novus and Manchester College. This collaborative project explores recycling and sustainability through innovative artworks made from repurposed plastic.
The exhibition features work from three groups, each interpreting the theme in a unique way. Prison learners from five North West institutions took part in a Family Learning project, creating large wall hangings using layers of single-use plastic bags, each carrying a personal message. They also crafted wallets containing short stories about recycling heroes, gifted to their families as part of a special educational day.
HMP Buckley Hall learners took inspiration from renowned artist El Anatsui, upcycling furniture with recycled plastic to create striking bespoke pieces. Meanwhile, T Level students from Manchester College worked with plastic-fused fabrics, designing and producing imaginative, one-of-a-kind bags.
Throughout the project, participants developed valuable skills, from teamwork and creativity to problem-solving and confidence-building. The initiative also played a key role in supporting family relationships and rehabilitation, demonstrating the transformative power of creative learning.
Sarah Hartley, Novus National Lead for Creative Strategies, said:
“The inventive use of recyclable materials highlights the creativity and resourcefulness of everyone involved. Projects like this foster critical thinking, communication, and self-development, helping to inspire a sense of purpose.”
